MP gets commitment from Home Secretary

Brian Binley MP received a commitment from Home Secretary, Teresa May, to meet with a delegation from Northamptonshire Police about the effects formula funding is having on the County’s police force.

Over the past year Brian has consistently pressured the Government into reviewing the formula grant funding and damping mechanism which has cost Northamptonshire’s Police Force £1.884 million pounds over the last three years.

Brian said: “My right Hon. Friend will be aware that Northamptonshire people will have little to thank the previous Government for. They reviewed the formula funding in a way that benefited the County and then failed to implement it.”

“They admitted that the population figures used were incorrect but failed to act on them and they cheated Northamptonshire police out of millions of pound per year. On that basis will my right Hon. Friend meet with a delegation from Northamptonshire and, I hope, talk about formula funding?”

The Home Secretary responded stating she or the Police Minister would be happy to meet such a delegation.

Brian said: “I am delighted by this commitment. For too long now Northamptonshire police and the people of Northamptonshire have received a raw deal when it comes to policing and this must be addressed.”

“It also gives Northamptonshire police the opportunity to directly stake their claim to the Government on the needs of the force which has suffered massively under Labour.”

“I will continue to fight for a fairer funding formula and this is only the first step towards ensuring Northamptonshire police gets the funding it badly needs.”

Ministerial Visit to Northampton

Brian Binley MP for Northampton South is delighted that Bob Neill MP and Minister in the Department of Communities and Local Government has agreed to visit Northampton on Friday (3rd September) to discuss local planning and development issues.

Bob Neill visited the County prior to the election and spoke to a public meeting on the issue of the JPU’s suggested plans to build 18,000 new homes south of Northampton. He promised to return to the town as soon as possible after the General Election if a new Government was elected.

Brian said: “I am delighted that Bob has kept his promise and will return to Northampton to discuss the town’s future development.”

“This is further good news for Northampton following last months announcement that £9.3 million pounds worth of infrastructure funding has been granted by the Government to develop the Ransom Road area of the town.”

Bob Neill will attend meetings with the County’s local MP’s, Council Leaders and Planning Portfolio holders before trips to the WNDC, Northampton Saints Rugby Club and Northampton Town Football Club.

Brian said: “I am delighted that Bob has agreed to visit Northampton to discuss a number of planning and development issues which affect the County as a whole.”

“Amongst the issues we hope to discuss are Northampton Town Centre and the Government’s plans for protecting Greenfield sites by building on brownfields first.

“We also hope to discuss the future of the WNDC and the current housing situation together with planning issues.”

Councils not doing enough for Small Businesses

“I have been very disappointed with the Borough and County Councils timid approach to placing work with small businesses within the County.” said Brian Binley MP following responses to his letters which didn’t answer his question regarding the percentage of total spend on contracts which had been granted to small and medium sized businesses in the County.

Brian has been fighting for a better deal for small and medium sized businesses for over two years, arguing that too many tender opportunities have gone to big ‘out of County’ companies.

Brian said: “Until the Councils can answer this question, I will continue to believe that both Councils don’t really bother about employment in the County or the health of its small and medium sized businesses.”

“The Government has set a 23% target for awarding contracts to SMEs and I am concerned that neither Council is taking the matter seriously enough.”

“Both Councils need to do more to support Northamptonshire’s small and medium sized businesses which accounts for 94% of private sector employment in the County.”

The only way out of the present financial crisis is to create more jobs and earn more for the Country and in Northamptonshire that means supporting the small business sector. We all know that it is the sector which will grow the most jobs and both Councils are failing to help those businesses in the way they should.

Brian said: “Every time ‘out of County’ companies are awarded contracts more money and employment opportunities which are lost to local people.”

“Northampton has one of the fastest growing rates of unemployment. When Labour came to office Northampton was 440th in the long list of areas of unemployment. We rose to 132nd in that list under Labour.”

“If we are to grow the jobs we need it is vital that the small and medium sized business sector in Northamptonshire is strong and both Councils really need to get off their backsides and do something about it if we are to get people back to work.”

Brian continued: “I am going to write to both Councils again and urge them to produce reports, every four months, so that the situation can be monitored more effectively and we can ensure that small businesses in Northamptonshire are receiving their fair share of local contracts.”
