Brian Binley MP for Northampton South has again called on the Government to do more to create growth in the economy and has recently questioned the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne in the House of Commons on the issue.
Brian said: “I welcome the Chancellors comments about the need to cut deficits but a healthier market is important to our export performance.”
“Will he therefore remember that there is a need to instil demand in the British Economy and does he recognise how important that is to both households and business?”
It is clear for all too see that demand is weak thanks to an absence of confidence. Households and businesses are bracing themselves for further shocks and I know from my own post bag and inbox just how hard many families and businesses in Northampton are finding the current economic situation.
Living standards are eroding, real income is decreasing, and inflation remains well above expectations and house prices are still falling.
There is no doubt that tackling the deficit is a positive step to take, the mess left behind by the previous Labour Government is well publicised but confidence, demand and growth will be vital to solving many of the problems we have inherited.
That is why I urge the Chancellor on behalf of my hard working constituents and businesses within Northampton who view the whole economic situation on their personal balance sheets and assess the bottom line.
We should therefore encourage them to do what they most wish, by helping businesses to sell and consumers to buy.
Given our current situation we need to be more proactive in tackling inflation which itself would remove fear and provide greater confidence.
We need to use limited fiscal measures to encourage that demand and as I have said many times before the housing would be a good place to start.
