Some two years ago I detected a small lump in my neck which was later diagnosed as Low Grade Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. I was told at the time that I would eventually need what the doctors euphemistically referred to as “treatment.” I later found this to mean chemotherapy, and that time has now arrived. On the 25th January I will be starting a 6-month course, consisting of eight three week cycles.
Let me say from the outset that I recognise that many other people have gone through and will go through the exact same situation that I am about to embark upon. The real reason I am saying all of this is that the doctors have told me my hair might fall out and I think my constituents ought to know why that change might be occurring, if it does. I have nothing but praise for the staff at Northampton General Hospital and the doctors are fully confident that the condition is manageable and that the treatment will result in remission. I am, of course, hopeful of that outcome too, not least because I still have a lot of work to do in Northampton!
Many will know that I oversee the Northampton Alive project working with the leaders of County Council, Borough Council, Chairman of Urban Development Corporation and Chairman of the Northamptonshire LEP. That project, if we are able to pull it off, will change the fabric and structure of the town for good, providing great job opportunities and security for generations to come. Given that it will take some 10 to 15 years to complete it’s absolutely crucial that the foundations are well laid and it’s a point of personal pride for me to ensure that this happens.
I also have the privilege of Chairing the Northampton Rail Users Group, which oversees the planning and development of the new station and its relationship with the Heritage Gateway. The plans for that project are to be unveiled very shortly, with a view to ensuring that the new station is up and running by the end of 2014. We will be providing a vital and impressive entrance to the town for many of the senior businessmen who will be looking to establish their businesses on the new Enterprise Zone.
In other words I face the New Year with optimism, both for myself and for the town which I have had the great honour to represent. Together we can ensure that the work we do over the next 2 or 3 years will restore Northampton to its rightful place as one of the leading towns in the UK.

May God give you the strength to match your courage and determation. It's gentlemen like you who are a credit to public service. Best regards. Petro
ReplyDeleteBrian, I have just read your news in our local Herald & Post, I wish you all the very best with your course of treatment and sincerely hope that you make a full recovery and will be able to continue your excellent work on behalf of the people of Northampton.
ReplyDeleteThe new train station and the prospect of further job opportunities for this town are welcome additions and I hope that you continue to oversee these projects to their successful completion.
Kind regards Fiona
If Cameron & Co had listened their future could have been success but they didn't and it looks distinctly like failure.
ReplyDeleteCameron ‘s LONG AWAITED policy statement regarding Britain’s EU membership STILL CAN’T KEEP UP WITH CURRENT AFFAIRS.
ALL THE BULLY BOYS are making pro-EU noises, the CBI, America and now Germany. One of Angela Merkel’s closest allies is worried about us being ‘weak and isolated’, warning ‘a referendum was high risk and could lead the UK to economic disaster’, stating ‘you cannot create a political future if you are blackmailing other states’.
Nothing to do with the fact that Merkel is facing re-election towards the end of this year and a high percentage of Germans are not happy with the EU either, or the fact that if we pull out the whole EU experiment is likely to fall apart because it would leave only Germany as a large net contributor (French never to be depended upon and others up the creek without a paddle).
Apparently Cameron is due to deliver his long awaited speech in The Hague or Brussels – WHY? Cameron constantly ignores the fact that UK VOTERS ARE HIS MASTER not the corrupt EU politicians. With over 80% of UK voters wanting the referendum that HE PROMISED and over 50% wanting to leave the EU completely, how is Cameron going to justify his policy of forming a looser trade-based relationship with YET ANOTHER future promise of a referendum in 2018 if they are re-elected. HE CONTINUES TO IGNORE UK VOTERS AND WILL FAIL TO BE RE-ELECTED.
On 10th December I commented that……… ‘Cecilia Malmstrom, EU Home Affairs Commissioner had stated, ‘there can be NO RE-NEGOTIATION OF OUR EU RELATIONSHIP, simply IN or OUT, warts and all’. Cecilia effectively negated Cameron & Co’s spin (lies) on the matter. His proposed policy of ‘re-negotiate then accept/reject EU referendum’ planned for after the next election was just another ‘kick into long grass’ policy designed to keep the UK in the EU, whilst placating euro-sceptics and of course, ensuring future lucrative EU jobs. No doubt Cecilia's comments will subsequently be ‘clarified/dismissed’ & the charades of ‘repatriation of UK rights negotiations’ will continue’. NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
INCREASINGLY UK VOTERS SUPPORT UKIP – IT IS OUR COUNTRY’S BEST OPTION.
PM frees Tory ministers over EU vote as he says they will be allowed to campaign for exit

NOT EVEN CLOSE - THE VAST MAJORITY OF UK VOTERS WANT OUT!
BYE BYE TORY PARTY
OVER 10,000 JOBS LOST SO FAR THIS YEAR – THE UK RECOVERY IS GETTING SLOWER BY THE MINUTE!
ReplyDeleteJessops 1,370 jobs lost, HMV 4,350, Blockbusters 4,190 and a London based Bank 300 not to mention those gone from Comet’s closure.
Back on 22nd October 2011 I wrote on your blog:-
‘In 1999 Roy Jenkins observed there are only two sensible paths for the UK with regards to European integration.
1. Participate fully, endeavour to exercise as much influence and gain as much benefit as possible from the inside……………BE AT THE HEART OF IT……………or
2. Recognise that Britain’s history, national psychology and political culture may be such that we can never be anything but a foot-dragging and constantly complaining member, and that it would be better, and would certainly produce less friction, to accept this and move towards an orderly, and if possible, reasonably amicable separation……………GET OUT OF IT
Unfortunately the Conservative party has chosen the first path not realising that the second path accurately describes precisely the futility of British EU membership and why, for Britain, the first path will never work.’
RENEGOTIATION IS NOT A VIABLE OPTION – PEOPLE WANT OUT
‘Thus it is the path which defines Cameron as a ‘Muppet’ and it is the path which has split the Conservative party and rendered it unelectable for decades – the 2015 elections are looming, the recession is falsely believed over – it is not – inflation will rise significantly this winter (fuel & food) and unemployment will rise throughout 2013 (a triple dip) - with Cameron as Prime Minister they will fail AGAIN!’
CAMERON IS STILL LEADING THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY TO EVER-LASTING DEFEAT - VOTERS ARE VERY FED-UP AND ANGRY AT THE LACK OF DEMOCRACY IN THIS COUNTRY
With NO IN/OUT REFERENDUM offered now ON OUR EU MEMBERSHIP FROM ANY OF THE MAIN UK POLITICAL PARTIES it will create MAJOR SOCIAL UNREST and there will be more BLOOD ON CONSERVATIVE HANDS.
UKIP IS THE ONLY PARTY OFFERING DEMOCRACY
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI have a quick question about your blog, would you mind emailing me when you get a chance?
Thanks,
