Vincent's Price: A Horror Story

A week, they say is a long time in politics. So three months must feel like forever in Cabinet. Vince Cable may be wishing it was.

Three months ago today, the Government privatised Royal Mail. Quite rightly, it had recognised that there is no practical reason why an employee of the state can more efficiently move a piece of paper from Point A to Point B than somebody working in the private sector.

The problem came, however, with the price. It was instantly clear to everybody, except the Secretary of State in charge of the sell off, that the price had been set ridiculously low. We told the minister to his face when he came before the committee that I sit on that scrutinises his actions. It smacked of selling two thirds of the shares at knock-down prices to the City.

Mr Cable’s defence at the time was that share prices go up at launch, and settle down afterwards. So the initial jump wasn’t a real loss to the taxpayer, just some “froth” that would by definition just fizzle away. We would see the truth in three months.

Well, as of today, three months have passed. As at the opening of trading on that anniversary, the share price was still up by exactly 70% higher than the launch price. There was no froth. There weren’t even bubbles. It was just bad pricing.

Today we can see the reality in context. At a time when the Government was grappling with a massive deficit, Mr Cable’s department was undervaluing a major sell off that has deprived the taxpayer of millions.

I am not myself an economist, unlike Mr Cable who has a PhD from the 1970s. I have never worked as an economist for an oil firm. I don’t have a reputation amongst the Left Wing media of having been a critic of Gordon Brown’s economic policy, though heaven knows enough of us were.

But I am by background a businessman, and I know when I’ve been sold a pup. This is one such occasion.

The most charitable thing I can say right now is that I’m glad Mr Cable’s in the department of Business right now rather than in the Treasury.

  1. Well said Brian - however I bet it wasn't so clear to Cameron - he has a nasty habit of jumping to the wrong side of most arguments.

Also Brian with your valuable background as a businessman, what would YOU do with an employee who wasn't performing well?

    FIONA’S OPINION…………….

When the economy picks up we will have SHED-LOADS OF IMMIGRANTS (QUITE LITERALLY), plus many more 20-30 something year olds who are presently renting or still at home, ALL LOOKING TO BUY A PROPERTY.

This is NOT a short-term bubble and there is NOT going to be a correction any time soon!

Property prices will continue to escalate until government tackles the underlining problems.

We MUST slow immigration and we MUST build more homes - Planning regulations need to be simplified and PASSED more frequently and the nimbies WILL have to get used to it!!! .

Setting more government land aside for building is a step in the right direction but why has it taken 3 years to get to this desperate point?

    2. You can't trust CONLIBLAB - they ALL want to stay with the gravy train!

    3. Invoke Article 50 - the only Great Escape Tunnel from the EU.

    4. "George Osborne is to say that Britain should remain in a reformed European Union"
Who will be the first member of the government to say, unequivocally, that Britain should leave the EU come what may?

    5. Any renegotiations are a sham! They need the agreement of ALL other 27 members. No chance!
As the corrupt, unelected, unaccountable, gravy trainers tell us , the aim is a country called 'USE'. Fellow travellers like Clarke,Heseltine et al have always said, untruthfully, like Heath about ' no loss of sovereignty, that there was no intention to form a federal 'country'.
They are found to be liars and traitors, no better than Philby and Burgess etc.
VOTE UKIP and bring these traitors(there are many) to trial for selllng out their country to a foreign power.

    6. Time and time again, the B'oso and other senior figures in the Brussels dictatorship have made it clear that there can be no re-negotiation, no "cherry-picking", no special treatment.
Only a couple of days ago, the Commission was telling us that the European elections in May will, in fact, be a no-holds-barred, winner-takes-all battle against those who oppose the relentless drive towards a single European superstate.
Osborne and his treacherous boss know that what they are offering is impossible. He's a liar. Ignore him.

    7. Well said.
The extent of their naked shameless lying is as astonishing as it is deeply insulting. Osborne along with Cameron, Milliband and Clegg are shamelessly attempting to utterly and totally destroy our fundamental political rights.
What amazes me is that the BBC runs programmes saluting the Suffragettes and other people when those people would be utterly appalled at what is really going on.
Womens rights, mens' rights, any rights are worthless if you have no vote and that is exactly what is planned and intended by these nasty liars. The political class in the UK loathes the electorate and are desperately trying to neuter all our ability to protect ourselves or have any say. They wish to return to a medieval form of government freed from irritating little people having any say whatsoever.
I hope they (conliblab) are hurled into political impotence and oblivion.

THESE ARE THE VIEWS OF VOTERS......SO WHY DO OUR POLITICIANS IGNORE THEM?

Brian I have enjoyed reading your blog for a long time now, you have done your best to flatter, cajole, push & threaten David Cameron along right-wing lines but even you must realise by now he is a lost cause.

David Cameron is never going to stand up for Britain and renegotiate our relationship in the way that any right-wing conservative would wish for because he is another ‘Liberal’ Conservative PM like those who have gone before him who have lied to the voters of Great Britain and have put the wishes of the EU first and democracy a very poor second; presumably because he feels he knows what is best for us all.

Great Britain is in its current predicament because Ted Heath, another arrogant liberal conservative PM lied to voters regarding membership of the EU. In fact, over the last few decades the Tory party has become infected and irrevocably split by pro-euro liberal liars; talking of which Ken Clarke is completely and utterly wrong as he always is but more to the point he is STILL THERE. David Cameron is still NOT listening and he is marching the Tory party to certain political defeat. Traditional Tory voters are either turning to UKIP or are left without a party option.

The entire EU project is terminally ill. We now have probably a max. of 10 countries supplying most of the billions to run it, and all of the newer States are coming close to demanding how and where it is spent. In another few years, these former Eastern Bloc States will be able to combine as a group to force policy on the Western States. No, no, no. 13. Osborne to EU: Reform or lose us as member

By Andrew Osborn | Reuters 15 January 2014

British finance minister George Osborne will warn the European Union on Wednesday it must reform if it wants Britain to remain a member, and say it faces decline if it resists change, said an official familiar with the contents of his speech.

    OBVIOUSLY

Addressing a conference on reform of the 28-nation bloc, Osborne, a close ally of Prime Minister David Cameron, will say his ruling Conservative party is determined, if re-elected in 2015, to keep its promise to renegotiate Britain's EU ties before offering Britons an in/out membership referendum.

HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE…..DO YOU THINK VOTERS WILL FALL FOR THAT ONE AGAIN?

"It is the status quo which condemns the people of Europe to an ongoing economic crisis and continuing decline. And so there is a simple choice for Europe: reform or decline."

WHY KEEP THE STATUS QUO GOING FOR ANOTHER 3 YEARS IN THAT CASE?

According to the official, Osborne will make it clear he wants Britain to stay in the EU, but say meaningful reform is vital for it to remain a member of a club it joined in 1973.

WHY STAY IN THE FAILING EU? REFORM IS VITAL & THE BEST WAY TO BRING ABOUT RADICAL CHANGE IS TO FORCE THE ISSUE BY LEAVING, THEY WILL NOT CHANGE UNTIL FORCED TO. WE DID NOT JOIN UP FOR UNDEMOCRATIC & UNACCOUNTABLE EUROPEAN SUPERSTATE MEMBERSHIP – AS USUAL WE WERE LIED TO!

Osborne's rare foray into Britain's emotive Europe debate is likely to irk EU officials and some European politicians who will resent his gloomy assessment of the bloc's economy and some of the blunt language he will deploy to make his case.

THE TRUTH HURTS AND THEY’RE ALL HAVING SUCH A NICE TIME AT UK TAXPAYERS’ EXPENSE.

It is also likely to be seen as an attempt to shore up his party's fragile position ahead of European Parliament elections in May, where it faces a threat from the anti-EU UK Independence Party, and to calm a fractious anti-EU element in Osborne's own party before a national election in 2015.

UKIP WILL WALK THE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS AND THE FRACTIOUS ANTI-EU ELEMENT WITHIN THE TORY PARTY ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING LIKE ENOUGH!

    Continued...............

  14. DIVISIVE ISSUE

Divisions over Europe have torn the Conservative party apart in the past and undid the last two Conservative prime ministers, John Major and Margaret Thatcher.

THE PRO-EU TORYS ARE TO BLAME FOR ALL OUR PROBLEMS – STARTING WITH TED HEATH – THEY LIE/D AND LIE/D SOMEMORE.

Cameron thought his promise last year of a renegotiation and of a referendum had united the party, but eurosceptic MPs have shown signs of becoming restless over the issue again.

    ABOUT TIME TOO!

Almost 100 of Cameron's 303 Conservative MPs in the lower house of the British parliament wrote to him at the weekend saying they wanted the chamber to have the ability to block new EU legislation and to repeal existing measures which threatened "national interests".

    NOT ENOUGH!

Government ministers said the request was "unrealistic".

THE 100 CONSERVATIVE MPS SHOULD JOIN UKIP BECAUSE THAT IS THE ONLY PARTY LOOKING AFTER OUR NATIONAL INTERESTS.

Many polls have shown a slim majority of Britons - disenchanted with the EU's red tape and what they view as its overbearing intervention in their everyday lives - would vote to leave the EU if given the chance.

RUBBISH – THE POLLS ARE FIXED – THE LARGE MAJORITY UNHAPPY WITH THE EU WILL BE HEARD THIS MAY.

Other polls have been less equivocal. But both pro and anti-EU groups agree any referendum would be close.

    MORE LIES!

The Conservatives have not yet disclosed all the areas they want to reform, but the general thrust of their demand is that they want Britain and other member states to repatriate powers in policy areas such as immigration and social security.

    IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH!

Osborne, who is presiding over a strong economic recovery in Britain, will say the European economy has stalled and is being shown up by economies like China and India.

A RECOVERY BUILT ON CONSUMER DEBT.

"We knew there was a competitiveness problem in Europe before the crisis," he will say.

SOCIALISM IS NEVER COMPETITIVE, YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT THE FRENCH WOULD HAVE GOT THAT BY NOW!

"But the crisis has dramatically accelerated the shifts in the tectonic economic plates that see power moving eastwards and southwards on our planet."
He will single out Europe's decreasing share of world patent applications, its high unemployment rates, and its welfare spending as areas that reflect its decline.

"As Angela Merkel has pointed out, Europe accounts for just over seven percent of the world's population, 25 percent of its economy, and 50 percent of global social welfare spending. We can't go on like this."

It's not fair to hard working families that holidays go up by such a significant amount just because of the school holidays! We have booked a holiday at the end of July. 19. GOVERNMENT HAS TO LEAD THE WAY…………SO I WILL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT!!!

It’s time to embrace deferred gratification and to start saving

by Allister Heath CityAM January 22, 2014, 1:18am

WOW. We knew that the pension crisis was bad – but in reality it’s even worse than that. The situation is catastrophic: the average pension pot is just £36,800, and many people have nothing at all. On current paltry annuity rates, that is just enough to generate a retirement income of a miserable £1,340 a year.

The Institute of Economic Affairs recommends encouraging people to put far more of their income aside and to adopt an Australian-style compulsory savings system. A society where everybody saved 12 per cent – and maybe even more – of their income all of their lives, and in which the money was carefully stashed away in privately-owned, named individual savings and investment accounts, would be very different to today’s.

It would of course allow people to enjoy a proper retirement. It would provide a huge pool of capital to finance business. But almost as importantly, it would change our values: we would have less money to spend on immediate consumption, and would be forced to embrace much greater amounts of delayed gratification (PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY).

Everybody would own a stake in the economy and the corporate world, and the public would become much more supportive of policies that increased GDP growth and allowed companies to prosper. Support for anti-capitalist measures and wealth taxes would dwindle. It’s time to start a national debate on savings. We need to do much more of it, and we need to start today.

The last thing we need is compulsion; it is not up to the state to tell people how to save for their future. The problem is that the state has destroyed the motivation to save. Why save when the real return on savings is negative, and then you are still taxed on it? Why save when benefits are means-tested on savings? Why save when better-off pensioners are penalised? Why save when QE has made annuity returns derisory? Why save when Clegg wants to punish better-off pensioners even more. Why save when the government may start taking away the tax-free cash element in pensions? Why save when you can spend every penny and the state will pay your bills?

WHY SAVE WHEN THE DILNOT REPORT HAS STILL NOT BEEN IMPLEMENTED? – THE STATE IS MAKING SURE THAT THE STATE GROWS – IF WE ARE EXPECTING THE STATE TO CHANGE THE PRESENT SYSTEM WE COULD WAIT A LONG TIME!

    LabLibCon_decadesofdestruction Alex
Why indeed! That is precisely why UK governments have to change completely and compulsion is required from both government and its people.

    Icarus
Yet another pension scare story that ignores all the options available and City AM just repeats it. Using the £240,000 sum and assuming the 25% tax free sum was taken (leaving £180,00) income drawdown would provide a maximum of £13,176 pa which together with the muted £7,000 basic state pension gives £20,176 25% above the £16,200 claimed to be the minimum required for a decent retirement. All you needed was a little bit of knowledge about pensions and to use one of the many income drawdown calculators available on the web to test Policy Exchange's assertion.

    LabLibCon_decadesofdestruction Icarus
And what if a future UK government decided that it could no longer afford to pay the £7,000 basic state pension? Where would people who have not saved be then?

  20. I’M FULLY IN FAVOUR OF PUTTING MONEY ASIDE FOR LATER LIFE………….THE PROBLEM IS GOVERNMENT’S STICKY FAT FINGERS!!!

Brits told: Save six times more for your pension or face poverty

by Michael Bow CityAM January 22, 2014, 1:21am

BRITISH workers must be forced by government to save six times more of their salary or face dying in poverty, a damning new report warns today. Average savers have just £36,800 to pay for old age. Current levels of savings would give a retiree an annual salary of just £1,340.

Now the group is calling on ministers to abolish rules letting people opt-out of pension savings and make retirement savings compulsory like general taxation. “This is putting an intolerable burden on the state which needs to be addressed sooner rather than later,” said James Barty, who wrote the report for the think tank.

“With an ageing population, putting money aside for later life should be seen in the same context as National Insurance contributions, taxes and even education – an obligation that falls on everyone in society.”

Pensions minister Steve Webb is rolling out a scheme to automatically enrol workers into a pension scheme, but it has been criticised for the low rate of savings that the measures require. Under the current rules, workers will have to put away eight per cent of their salary into a pension but the Policy Exchange calculates this will leave workers with just 55 per cent of what is required to survive in retirement. It says the threshold should be closer to 12 per cent and there should be no room for workers to opt-out of the scheme.

Alan Brown, senior adviser at Schroders, said: “Underfunded pensions are a ticking time bomb and ignoring the problem will not make it go away. We must fund our pensions in a sustainable way which is fair both to the current generation of workers and to those who are to follow.”

MUCH OF THE HORDING OF CASH BY BIG BUSINESSES RATHER THAN INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGY, EQUIPMENT & PREMISES IS BECAUSE OF THEIR MAJOR CONCERNS OVER EMPLOYEE PENSION & HEALTH LIABILITIES WHICH HAVE BEEN EXACERBATED BY SEVERAL YEARS OF LOW INTEREST RATES.

  22. Another leaflet has just been posted through my letterbox, this one is from Northampton Whitehills and Spring Park Residents Association (WASPRA), as I live in their catchment area.

It has an aerial view of the morning rush-hour traffic coming into Kingsthorpe on the Harborough Road with the photograph centred on the Vyse Road & Brampton Lane mini roundabout. The traffic is heavy and slow moving as it is in many areas at peak time. The leaflet is titled, ‘WASPRA’s Traffic Nightmare!’ and warns of ‘000’s more cars?’

The leaflet informs me that, ‘The West Northants Growth Strategy currently offers no evidence of a robust solution to solve this traffic situation. There is no North-West ByPass planned. Almost on our doorstep 7,500 houses are immediately planned in addition to ongoing developments. South and West Northampton are also scheduled for imminent development of some 8,500 houses. WASPRA has had a productive meeting with Northamptonshire County Council Highways Management and local Councillors at which our traffic counts have been confirmed and the Council has committed to share information with WASPRA.’

‘Neither the Borough or County Council think this growth plan is sustainable and both Councils voted 100% against it at a recent Planning Meeting.’

As you may have guessed, this is concerning the proposed new housing at Buckton Fields and how I can register my concerns. Planning permission was originally sought for around 2000 dwellings although I understood that the proposed number had been reduced to just over 1000. A further 3000 homes are proposed for the Kings Heath area to the west of Northampton.

I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO OBJECTION TO NEW HOMES BEING BUILT, IN FACT I WOULD WELCOME THEM - THINK OF THE NUMBER OF JOBS THESE NEW HOMES WOULD SUPPORT - BUT THE INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS TO BE IN PLACE.

This is a good example of how ALL local councils need to sort out the local & strategic infrastructure regarding roads/traffic/emergency services/flooding/healthcare/schools etc.

Northampton has needed the completion of the North West Bypass/Ring Road for YEARS AND YET NOTHING EVER GETS DONE ABOUT IT.

Nor does Northampton North/West have any drive & park leisure/eating/diy/shopping facilities like the centres in the South & Eastern areas of Northampton which would help with the congestion in Kingsthorpe Centre.

THIS COUNTRY NEEDS MORE HOUSING, MORE EMPLOYMENT AND BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE SO WHY NOT JUST GET ON WITH IT!

  23. LOTS OF UNCERTAINITY OVER INTEREST RATES…….AGAIN………

It’s rather funny how every time Mark Carney tries to elaborate on what the market should expect within a very short space of time the situation has dramatically changed. Forward guidance does not appear to be sufficiently forward or guiding or reassuring!

But let’s look at the situation logically:-

    1. The UK economy is mainly growing on the back of a housing boom and loads of ultra cheap credit.

    2. The UK government has a massive debt and raising interest rates would mean government paying more money in interest.

    3. IDS has been getting more people off unemployment benefits but that doesn't mean the economy is stronger just yet. Many people are in zero hours/part-time/less than full time jobs. Many people have had very little in the way of pay rises over the last few years and yet food, utility and travel costs, etc have all increased, this has eroded their spending power.

    4. The only thing that is keeping many families and businesses afloat is the lower mortgage and loan payments.

    5. Inflation is currently falling because families either have less money to spend or are choosing to pay down debt or both. Raising interest rates has always been a tool to slow down excessive growth, it is the foot on the brake. Raising interest rates would encourage yet more saving/paying down debt leading to lower inflation and moving our economy dangerously closer to the dreaded deflation.

    6. Until peoples incomes rise and inflation rises again, increasing interest rates would be a mistake.

    7. Enter George Osborne’s suggestion of £7 an hour minimum wage – a smart move. It just happens to be thereabouts 11% so it offsets the arguments regarding MP’s 11% increase. It offsets the arguments about them only appearing to care about the rich to some voters and would help to win the Tory party some voters which they sorely need! But the best bit for government is the fact that an increase in the minimum wage will lead inevitably to higher unemployment which will allow them to continue with the 0.5% interest rates for longer (which obviously works in their favour).

    8. In reality interest rates are not likely to rise significantly until AFTER the elections in 2015.

Savers with money in bonds or shares have done fine, only cash savers with banks and building societies have missed out because the government has swamped the market with very, very cheap money - and although the top bankers were very reckless it was the light touch regulation by government that allowed the crash to happen. Most problems go back to the government at the time which was Labour controlled.

and another thing..., In the sun, 1 hour ago
This is not a good omen for Carney's reputation or for confidence in him. Only 3 months ago he said that interest rates might rise if unemployment dropped to 7%. I am sure that he did not believe that it would anytime soon. Now that it had, he has began to back pedal on a policy he made such a short time ago. What he is doing is what I suggested a few days ago when the pound started to rise off the back of positive UK growth & employment figures. He is trying to talk down the rise in the value of sterling.

NO CARNEY DID NOT EXPECT IT TO HAPPEN SO SOON BUT THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LIGHT A FIRE UNDER THE HOUSING MARKET!

Update from The People’s Pledge - The campaign for an EU Referendum

Just 23 Lords Attempt to Sink EU Referendum Bill

Today, the EU Referendum Bill returns to Parliament for the next stage of its progress through the House of Lords.

This important Bill would take an EU referendum out of the realm of dodgy political promises and into law.

If approved by Parliament, it offers us another big step towards a vote on Britain's membership of the EU actually happening.

Thanks to your support, the People's Pledge has set the agenda on an EU referendum and changed policy right at the top of government.

Most recently we have been deploying our 131,000-strong army of referendum supporters to apply pressure from outside Parliament to turn this Bill into law - with further success.

It was striking, for example, that last year not one single MP dared to vote against the Bill in its most important Commons votes.

But today, this Bill faces its toughest test yet - a new torrent of proposed amendments, tabled by unelected members of the House of Lords.

Already, a total of 76 Lords amendments have been submitted to this brief, 3-page Bill.

Most incredibly of all, just 23 Peers are responsible for all these amendments!

That's right - just a tiny group of unelected members of the House of Lords are using their privileges to try to block the will of hundreds of MPs who passed the Bill and the vast majority of people who want their say on the EU - by forcing the Bill to run out of time.

If they succeed, this would be a travesty of democracy.

    Party shame

At the forefront of these moves are two former Labour MPs, Lord Foulkes and Lord Anderson, closely followed by the Plaid Cymru peer Lord Wigley.

Foulkes together with seven of his Labour colleagues - the Lords Grenfell, Richard, Anderson, Lipsey, Davies of Stamford, Williams of Elvel and Baroness Quin - are leading the charge to sink the Bill, between them tabling 67 (or 88%) of the proposed changes. Some of these many amendments include:
-downgrading the referendum to an overtly consultative vote
-making the vote subject to a prior 1 million-strong petition
    -postponing the referendum to 2020
-allowing UK-resident citizens of other EU countries to vote, and
-proposing multiple contradictory referendum questions and dates on which the vote should be held.
Some amendments are even duplicates of those already considered and rejected overwhelmingly by the House of Commons.

But these Labour peers are not alone. Six Liberal Democrat peers are involved in tabling 23 amendments, six Crossbenchers in 18 and two Conservative peers - Lords Bowness and Deben (the former MP John Gummer) - have between them signed 8 amendments.

SHAME ON ALL THOSE WHO DO NOT RESPECT DEMOCRACY!

Government in 'turmoil' over implementing flood precaution rules

By Roger Harrabin Environment analyst bbc

The government is in "turmoil" over the implementation of rules to prevent housing developments making floods worse, building industry sources say.

A deal has been reached on the long-standing question of how drainage features should be maintained, but the policy remains postponed indefinitely.

One industry source told BBC News civil service cuts had left ministers "incapable" of implementing the policy. Ministers said reducing the impact of flooding was a key priority.

    INDEFINITELY POSTPONED

A deal has been struck between the government, councils and builders in England and Wales which will make councils responsible for maintaining drainage features, such as ponds and grassy areas located to catch water running off roofs.

Councils will be able to bill owners of new homes for maintenance. The councils argue this is fair as owners of existing homes have to have their run-off water treated by water firms through the sewerage system.

But despite the deal, which has taken four years to achieve, the government has indefinitely postponed plans to introduce the new measures from April to allow time for further talks on details.

A Home Builders Federation spokesman said: "After all the work we have done with the government, we are disappointed about the delay to set up the processes for the adoption of the [drainage systems]. "House builders are seeking certainty over the systems they will be required to install and the processes for having them approved."

IS HS2 REALLY SO IMPORTANT WHEN WE HAVE HUGE FLOOD PROBLEMS, INSUFFICIENT HOMES, ENERGY, AIRPORT & ROAD CAPACITY PROBLEMS?

  31. IT’S NOT JUST STOKE-ON-TRENT WHICH IS LOST…………….THE TORY PARTY CAN’T SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES AND HAVE TURNED LEFT WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE TURNED RIGHT!

A comment made in response to yet another Georgian building being demolished in Stoke-on-Trent's City Centre.

    Stoke-on-Trent – the lost city!

Whilst the French were having their Revolution in the late 18th century, Stoke on Trent was at the heart of a British Revolution which would prove to be a totally different kettle of fish! It was in a time and a dynamic place where individuals who were bright, inquisitive, persistent and hard-working could make vast fortunes for themselves and their families.

This was the time and place when a man such as Josiah Spode the first (1733-1797), whose father died a pauper when he was just six years old, advanced unaided from obscure penury to ownership of an incredibly successful and extensive English pottery & porcelain manufacturing company. Spode is known and treasured world-wide to this day for its wonderful and internationally important ceramic products which have great beauty, quality and diversity. His success was only arguably surpassed by Josiah Wedgwood but he had the advantage of being born into a long established family of master potters, although he had to overcome smallpox at the age of 11 which left him with a painful and troublesome leg that had to be amputated when he was 38, a very dangerous operation in 18th century England which many did not survive. It was said of Josiah Spode, ‘with his wealth increased his kindness’, an epitaph of which anyone could be proud. Both Spode and Wedgwood ceramics are proudly displayed in major museums world-wide.

Spode and Wedgwood were ‘pot makers’ and they wasn’t the only ones in the Stoke area; there was Masons, Adams, Wood, Ridgway, New Hall, Turner and Minton to mention just a few and for the successful manufacturers there were pots full of money for the making. They all embraced the opportunities which social changes bring, new technologies and capitalism. Many of the earlier manufacturers such as Spode/Copeland and Wedgwood went on for several generations to become household names.

Later they were followed by Aynsley, Royal Doulton, J & G Meakin, Moorcroft and Gray’s plus many others; they were all part of the industry, tradition & area collectively known as the ‘Potteries’. Between them they created over 250 years’ worth of British tableware for every strata of our society plus contributing to a valuable British export trade and Stoke was its beating heart.

Sadly many have now disappeared, presumably through a combination of bad management and/or poor quality, poor design, lack of product desirability, lack of innovation and a lack of competitiveness in a global market.

Emma Bridgewater has said that her inspiration for starting to produce her own pottery range based in Stoke-on-Trent was inspired by standing in a china shop and feeling cross and frustrated, ‘Why was everything on display so completely irrelevant to her tastes?’, she asked herself. Society had moved on but the china industry hadn’t! Emma started her pottery business in 1985 with no business plan and no capital, just a great deal of artistic ability, enthusiasm, the willingness to work extremely hard and the desire to succeed. Precisely the same attributes which had made some of Stoke’s forebears equally successful many years earlier.

    Continued.......

  32. Continued.........

Sadly Stoke-on-Trents’ citizens & council rejected capitalism almost a life-time ago; all three constituencies have returned Labour MPs virtually without interruption since their creation in 1950. Now Stoke-on-Trent City Council is THE city’s largest single employer and the next major employer is the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with over 7,000 staff!

A Stoke Labour run council has presided over the demolition of its rich industrial heritage, replacing the now many flattened ‘blank canvas’ sites with soul-less new developments, the mantra of preservation and conservation seems to have bypassed the city. Talking of which, their road systems have a reputation for being in a constant state of utter confusion.

Most of the bottle kilns have been pulled down together with the great ceramic factories, terraces of workers’ housing, pubs, churches and chapels in fact whole communities have disappeared. You would have thought that Stoke-on-Trent would be keen to restore and use the Spode Works premises as a prestigious museum to showcase the extensive collection of Spode artifacts held in the possession of the Spode Museum Trust which could attract thousands of visitors worldwide.

But not a bit of it! Stoke-on-Trent City Council is spending £72K to repair and re-decorate the Grade II listed Church Street entrance to the Spode Works, having ignored it and allowed it to fall into disrepair previously, all in the hope of attracting a buyer for the whole 10-acre site who will no doubt get planning permission to turn yet another bit of Stoke’s heritage into a ‘blank canvas’ development site.

What a sad, sorry decline. Will Stoke-on-Trent’s citizens & council ever rediscover capitalism I wonder?

And will Great Britain ever do justice to the great Spode & Wedgwood collections?

A Friend of the Spode & Wedgwood Museums

By Matt Chorley, Mailonline Political Editor Daily Mail 31 January 2014

The furore over the government’s handling of the devastating floods in Somerset is ‘irrelevant’ to the people affected, Ken Clarke has claimed. The senior Tory minister dismissed the ‘lynch mob’ looking for someone to blame after communities on the Somerset Levels spent a month under water.
Ministers have come under fire for not acting sooner, and after backlash from local MPs David Cameron this week appeared to take charge of the situation personally. He announced dredging would resume as soon as is practical and warned Cabinet colleagues that arguments between departments would not be tolerated.

High winds, torrential rain and a tidal surge are expected to swamp coastal defences and swell already bursting rivers over the weekend. This will spell more misery for the Somerset Levels, which have been under water for a month.

The Environment Agency has come in for severe criticism for stopping dredging in the mid-1990s. But David Jordan, operations director at the quango, who earns more than £160,000 a year, told Sky News last night: ‘People are trying to make this an Environment Agency-only problem. ‘It is something which is shared by others and must be owned by others so we

His organisation has pledged only £350,000 to dredge the two key rivers in Somerset – the Parrett and Tone – an operation which will cost at least £4million. Yet it has been willing to spend £20million on a bird sanctuary on the Somerset coast. ‘We have a responsibility to ensure that the taxpayers’ money we are given to invest in reducing flood risk is spent to the best effect,’ Mr Jordan said. OBVIOUSLY HE HAS COMPLETELY FAILED IN THIS ASPECT. ‘We are committed to the dredging, we have put money on the table and that won’t change. MORE LIES.

Heidi Brownsey, 27, a mother-of-three from Langport, said: ‘When other countries have disasters our Government is happy to fund them but when we are in our own disaster they don’t seem to want to know or care. TOO TRUE.

IS IT BECAUSE THEY FEAR WHAT THEY COULD BE FOUND GUILTY OF WHEN THEY ARE OUSTED?

Small print of Labour's economic plan to borrow an extra £25BILLION poses 'biggest risk to recovery', Osborne warns

    • Shadow chancellor's pledge only covers day-to-day spending
    • George Osborne promised to run a surplus on the overall budget
    • It means Tories will cut £37.6bn while Labour would only need to cut £13bn

Anyone who would ever consider voting Labour with their previous economic record needs to get a brain cell transplant.......

On current polls it seems 40% of the UK population want to vote themselves into bankruptcy again, LIB LAB coalition just imagine that circus

I think the current national deficit is about £1.3 trillion - largely attributable to the 13 years of incompetence and mismanagement of the previous profligate Labour government. It costs the British taxpayer £43 billion/year just to service this debt. Balls is a "flat-lining" buffoon who seems incapable of original thought, and along with his Marxist party leader has clearly lost the plot. Anyone voting Labour at the next general election will condemn this country to economic meltdown.

GOD HELP US! if the labour government ever get into power again. Twice in my lifetime I have seen them in power and Twice they have brought this country to its knees and the Tory's have had to clean the dreadful mess they left behind. The labour party are totally unfit for purpose, Signed this country away to the EU on a massive scale. Wasted money on a massive scale, put this country in hock for decades, destroyed the education system, gave the banks too much control which led to you know what, sold OUR gold reserves for a pittance, destroyed the pensions ect ect ect. Quite frankly most of them should be hanging from a rope for TREASON!

Absolutely SPOT ON. I could not have put it better myself. I work in the maritime industry and my 'rope handling' skills are quite good!...............

Vote UKIP for sanity. Cameron will just carry on lying.

Fiona, Northampton, United Kingdom, 21 hours ago
Yes Labour are always terrible but why have UK voters seen no justice, no accountability from their government, no-one in court and no-one swinging? Why hasn't Blair, Brown, Balls and all the rest of them not been investigated for lying to voters? The Tory party really are not much better and I intend to vote UKIP for a change.

You forgot to mention they knew how bad they had screwed up, remember the note when the coalition turned up at HM Treasury? "Dear Chief Secretary, I'm afraid that there is no money"

AND Danny Alexander and the LibDems, after promoting the new pensions for all policy, is now proposing a £2 billion raid on it. AND with Labour and Balls would do it

  35. LABLIBCON ARE STILL NOT LISTENING TO THEIR VOTERS

Cameron's authority dented as he relies on Labour to defeat 86 Tory rebels who wanted to make it easier to deport foreign criminals

-Tory MP Dominic Raab tabled amendment on kicking out foreign criminals
-Downing Street and Home Office rejected it as 'illegal and unworkable'
-Rebels defeated when Ed Miliband ordered Labour MPs to oppose plans

Now it’s cast iron, the only way is UKIP.

Fiona, Northampton, United Kingdom, 1 hour ago
Absolutely - the Tory party are playing on voters worries of Labour getting in again and trashing what is left of our country but it is a game of chicken and they are going to lose! Even if we get another Labour administration which does trash this country the back-lash will come eventually! And only 86 Tory rebels? What a load of traitors the majority are.

LongMemory, Rainham, United Kingdom, 9 hours ago
At least we now know beyond doubt who the traitors are, and who the patriots are. Should our lily-livered government persist in allowing abuses under the Human Rights Act to continue, there will be a reckoning come election time.
